Gifts and Measuring Up

I am not going to claim that my wife and I share in the housework 50/50, but I do try to help.  I’ve been known to do dishes, vacuum, make the bed, help with the laundry, and outside yard work is basically my responsibility.

What has always amazed me is that when I clean a room and my wife cleans a room – it looks different.  It doesn’t make any difference how hard I try, my cleaning doesn’t look as good.  Her room is a little straighter, a little tidier, a little nicer looking.  I’ve given up on wrapping presents.  Hers look like they come from the gift wrap station at Macy’s.  Mine look like a preschool project.

I’ve come to the realization that I am just not very good at some things.  Even when I try, I can’t measure up in some areas.  Believe it or not, there are a couple things I can actually do better than my wife.

So sitting in your pile of gifts, think about your real gifts.  What is it that God has blessed you with, what you can do just a little better?  Doesn’t have to be earth-shattering.  We all have big and little gifts.  Recognize and run with your gifts because there are places where we won’t measure up.

For those of you wondering, the two areas that I do better than my wife are – I am much more proficient with the remote control and I can fall asleep faster.

  1. Bruce: Thank you for bringing such fun and inspiring notes every week. I truly look forward to them. BTW it would be hard for anyone to come up with things they could do better than your wife!!! God bless your whole family in 2015.
