An Unexpected Journey

We love to travel and getting to Haiti over the years is always an adventure. The journeys in my life have been fun, exciting, trying, exhilarating, and remarkable. I’m now headed into a journey that I didn’t expect, a cancer journey.

A couple weeks ago, I felt sharp pains in my side. After some scans, blood and other tests, it was confirmed that I have multiple myeloma. It’s basically a blood cancer that attacks the bone marrow and weakens the bones.

My oncologist/hematologist is great. He said this cancer is not curable, but it’s very manageable and that he’d expect 15+ years survival. Manageable is all I could ask for.

I tend to be a “Why not me” person instead of a “Why me” person. Living life and in my short tenure as a chaplain with a local hospital confirmed it for me – why not me? Every day people get difficult diseases and maladies they didn’t expect. I haven’t exercised enough, not eaten like I should, and even if I had, who knows? Crazy medical stuff also happens to buff vegetarians. So why not me?

I have a caring and loving family. I have caring and loving friends. I have more support than I deserve and know I’m not walking this path alone.

Another journey begins…

  1. Bruce, best of luck on your cancer journey! My dad had this cancer, too. His was from radiation expose during WWII. His was the first ship into Nagasaki after the bomb.
